Vasil Stoev is among the most recognizable contemporary Bulgarian painters – an author whose work is distinguished by bright colors, strong emotionality and an unmistakable sense of pictorial freedom. Born in 1950 in Parvomay, he graduated from the National Academy of Arts in 1979 with Professor Alexander Poplilov, majoring in Applied Graphics. Since 1987, he has been a member of the Union of Bulgarian Artists and the artistic group “Philipopolis”.

Although his education is related to graphics, it is painting that becomes his strongest means of expression. In his paintings, color is the leading character – saturated, energetic and free. Landscapes, figurative compositions and abstract suggestions are intertwined in works that bring a sense of movement, light and vitality. His works often balance between the real and the imaginary, leaving space for the viewer’s personal interpretation.

Vasil Stoev presented his first solo exhibition in 1981, and in the following decades he realized over 80 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous exhibitions in Bulgaria and abroad. His works have been shown in a number of European countries, and his work finds a place in collections around the world.

Today Vasil Stoev continues to actively create and present new exhibitions. Winner of a number of awards, including the Mayor of Plovdiv Award for overall presentation, he remains one of the artists associated with the characteristic color and creative energy of the contemporary Plovdiv painting school.
