Yordan Kalchev is among those artists for whom painting is not just a profession, but a long-term and consistent path. Born in 1955 in Plovdiv, he graduated from the National Academy of Arts with a degree in Painting under Academician Svetlin Rusev - a training that left a lasting mark on his attitude towards drawing, composition and the human figure.
In Kalchev's work, reality is always refracted through a personal perspective. His paintings combine figurativeness and associative thinking, transforming ordinary situations, objects and characters into carriers of deeper suggestions. Behind the apparent lightness of the images often lie philosophical observations about time, human relationships and memory. It is this combination of intellectual depth and pictorial freedom that makes his works recognizable and impactful.
Already at the beginning of his career, the artist received significant recognition with the First Prize at the VII National Youth Exhibition in Sofia and the First Prize at the International Painting Competition in Košice. Over the years, he has participated in numerous national exhibitions, international plein airs and art forums in Bulgaria and abroad, and his works are part of the collections of the National Gallery, the Sofia City Art Gallery and a number of regional art galleries.
In parallel with his active creative activity, Yordan Kalchev has dedicated decades to teaching. As a long-time lecturer at the National Art High School "Tsanko Lavrenov" and at the University of Plovdiv, he has left his mark on generations of young artists.
Today, Yordan Kalchev continues to actively create and present new exhibitions. His retrospective exhibition "The Road", presented on the occasion of his 70th anniversary, is a natural summary of a creative life dedicated to painting. In it, as in all his works, the conviction is evident that the true value of art is not in the spectacular gesture, but in its ability to tell human stories with honesty, wisdom and inner light.
